The Origins of Caesar Salad
The Caesar Salad was reportedly invented by Caesar Cardini, an Italian immigrant who owned restaurants in Mexico and the United States. The story goes that Cardini created the salad in his Tijuana restaurant in 1924 when a Fourth of July rush depleted his kitchen’s supplies. He threw together what ingredients he had left – lettuce, croutons, Parmesan cheese, boiled eggs, olive oil, and Worcestershire sauce – and the Caesar Salad was born.
Key Ingredients and Preparation
The classic Caesar Salad is a simple dish with a few key components. The base is made from romaine lettuce, known for its crisp texture and slightly bitter taste. The dressing, a creamy emulsion of egg yolks, olive oil, anchovies, garlic, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and Parmesan cheese, is what truly defines the salad. Croutons, added for a crunchy contrast, and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese complete the dish.
Some variations include grilled chicken, shrimp, or bacon, making the salad more substantial. Anchovies, either in the dressing or as a garnish, are a traditional element, but their inclusion varies according to taste.
